Serious crash leaves bicyclist hospitalized with head injury

In California, the San Diego Police Department was investigating a collision that left one bicyclist hospitalized with a serious head injury on March 19. The incident happened in the Pacific Beach neighborhood at the intersection of Hornblend Street and Mission Boulevard. It is not known if any charges are pending in the case.

Reports indicate that a 35-year-old man in a BMW was traveling northbound on Mission Boulevard when the bicycle entered his path at Hornblend Street. The 53-year-old bicyclist was traveling westbound when the accident occurred. The car had the right of way at the intersection and that the cyclist passed a stop sign at that location without stopping.

In serious bicycle accidents such as the one described here, it might appear that liability for the collision lies with the cyclist. However, the subsequent investigation could uncover a number of additional factors that might also have contributed to the crash. If the cyclist failed to heed the stop sign due to a malfunction of his equipment, liability might be established on the part of a manufacturer or other responsible party. In the event that charges are ultimately filed against an impaired or distracted driver, an attorney may be able to help an injured cyclist recover financial compensation for losses suffered as a result of the accident.

A California resident who is seriously hurt in a collision with a motor vehicle may find it beneficial to seek guidance from a personal injury attorney at the earliest opportunity. The attorney could take immediate steps to protect the client's rights and to maximize any compensation to which the client may be entitled.
