Cargo container on truck falls off, kills pedestrian

In a tragic and bizarre accident on the border of Long Beach and Carson, the shipping container on a flatbed truck fell off and crushed a person who was believed to be on a bicycle recently. The accident happened near an overpass, an it sounds like the container may have struck that overpass and eventually toppled over.

Few other details have been released, but we do know that the man who was pinned by the container did not survive.

Sadly, there is a lot of legal material here. First of all, many people may not realize that a truck's cargo plays a huge role in many truck accidents. The cargo may be improperly loaded in the truck, making the vehicle unstable and prone to tipping over. The cargo may be dangerous, violating rules and regulations that the trucking industry must adhere to. Or, like in this case, the cargo could literally be the cause of the accident.

In any of these situations, there could be numerous parties at fault for the accident. The driver could be liable for driving dangerously given the cargo he or she is transporting. The driver and/or the trucking company could also be held liable if the truck wasn't in a proper working order given the cargo being transported. There could have also been technical issues with the flatbed truck.

Truck accidents are often thought of as simple incidents that can be easily explained. However, there are certain incidents where there is more than meets the eye.
