Motorcycle safety equipment 101

Many would agree that the motorcycle riding season never truly ends in Southern California. That is why it is important for motorcycle riders to maintain their bikes and riding equipment, as well as observe safety guidelines and procedures, all year long. Here are a few helpful tips that every motorcycle enthusiast can keep in mind to promote safety and get the most out of their ride.

Understanding the inherent risks of motorcycle riding and practical safety measures can go a long way to protecting oneself and others on the road. After all, Allstate Insurance notes that motorcycle accident incidents at intersections result in approximately three motorcycle rider deaths daily. That is why the insurance company suggests that motorcyclists take a few practical safety measures before they ever hit the road.

Recognizing that many motorcyclists come in direct contact with the ground when an accident occurs, Allstate recommends that riders outfit themselves in high quality clothing and gear. Suggested motorcycle clothing and accessories include but are not limited to:

  • Ankle-high shoes or boots
  • Leather pants and jacket
  • Nonslip gloves

And while the importance of high quality and well-maintained motorcycle gear cannot be underestimated, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety places a great deal of emphasis on the role that motorcycle helmets play in preventing motorcycle accident injuries. It is estimated that traumatic-brain-injury rates are three times higher in motorcycle riders who do not wear helmets. Statistics also show that riders who do wear helmets are 37 percent less likely to die in the event that they are involved in an accident.
