Authorities investigating Berkeley bicycle accident

While drivers should always be mindful of pedestrians and bicycle riders, this is the time of year when they must especially keep an eye out for children playing and riding their bikes in the street any time of day. Now that many California students are out of school for the summer they can be expected to be enjoying themselves outdoors, and it is up to motorists to be aware of their surroundings and child-friendly zones like parks and residential neighborhoods.

A serious collision that recently occurred in Berkeley, and involved a 7-year-old boy riding his bicycle, was under investigation by the city’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team. According to authorities, the incident occurred in the early evening when the boy was struck by a vehicle near a local recreation area. The accident victim’s bicycle was found under the car and the child was admitted to an area hospital with serious injuries.

The vehicle and the bicycle were found in the center of the road and the driver of the vehicle reportedly remained at the scene of the accident. It is not stated whether or not the street was marked with signs warning of children at play. The speed that the vehicle was moving at the time of the accident was also not noted. Authorities stated that the boy will likely recover from his injuries.

Even in instances where a bicycle accident investigation does not result in criminal charges against a motorist involved, the victim and their family has the right to consult with an experienced attorney to explore their rights and options.
