Patrol car/bike crash kills one

Most Southern California residents may agree that perhaps the greatest appeal of living in a city like Los Angeles is that the climate allows for year-round outdoor recreation. That’s why so many LA residents and tourists alike take to the streets on everything from bicycles to skateboarders to roller skates. Sadly, though, making the most of the region’s mild seasons can place cyclists in danger on the roads. One prominent figure in the early online music scene died recently in a bicycle accident with a Los Angeles Police vehicle.

The fatal incident reportedly occurred on Mulholland Highway, a road becoming notorious for bicycle collisions. According to one online source, four fatal bicycle accidents have happened on the highway in recent years and over 30 deadly accidents have occurred this year alone in LA.

According to accident investigators and the LA Sheriff’s Department, the bicycle and the patrol car were traveling in the same direction when the incident occurred. The police car allegedly struck the bicycle in the bike lane, damaging the windshield of the car. Investigators have apparently ruled out factors like alcohol and speed in the fatal collision, and the police car was not reportedly responding to a call prior to the incident.

The bicycle rider was identified as Milton Olin Jr., a prominent lawyer and former COO of Napster. The 65-year-old accident victim reportedly died at the scene of the crash, and the Sheriff’s deputy received medical treatment at an area hospital for minor injuries.

Given that speed and drugs were apparently ruled out as possibly contributing to the fatal incident, investigators had yet to confirm why the police vehicle struck the bicycle.
